Darien Police say they responded to a Gardiner Street residence Sunday, May 12 around 1 a.m. on the report of an extremely intoxicated 16-year-old female who was allegedly unconscious.

The teen was transported to the hospital for evaluation. The teen’s mother allegedly told officers that she had been dropped off at the residence by the parent of her daughter’s friend, identified as Amanda Smith, 45, of Darien.

Officers then allegedly made contact with Smith at her home to ensure that there were no other juveniles in similar conditions. When asked, Smith said that she had picked up four girls but was unsure of where they had been, according to police.

Police say Smith initially would not allow officers to speak with her daughter but ultimately allowed it when alerted to the possibility of other juveniles being in need of medical assistance.

The girls were unwilling to disclose where they had been, according to police.

When Smith was asked again where she had picked the girls up, she allegedly told officers it had been on the side of Sunswyck Road.

Police say Smith refused to accompany officers to the area to attempt to locate the residence and the girls were turned over to the custody of their parents. At this time, one of the parents allegedly gave officers the location of the residence.

Police say they arrived at the residence and confirmed that the girls had been there earlier in the evening. However, there was no evidence of alcohol at the residence or intoxicated youth, according to police.

The parties on scene allegedly told officers that once the teen became incapacitated, one of the people present contacted Smith, who arrived at the residence, pulled into the driveway, assisted in carrying the unconscious teen to her vehicle and departed.

Further investigation revealed that the officers had been delayed nearly an hour since initially contacting Smith due to her refusal to cooperate, according to police. Officers also say Smith was deceptive when communicating her knowledge of the evening and these events.

Smith was issued a misdemeanor summons for interfering with an investigation. She was released on a written promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 23.

Investigations are ongoing, police say.
